Dutch unemployment agency, UWV, has indicated that, on average, 20% of Dutch employers are suffering from staff shortages. According to the report, this is double the number of shortages from 2017. The Dutch employee insurance agency tells us that the industries affected include, ICT, healthcare, transport, logistics, pedagogical and agricultural sectors. ICT shortages are among the highest.
The report shows as much as a 33% shortage in the IT service provider and technology industries. These ICT shortages are not a new theme to the Dutch market. Last month, we reported that there were 3,000 unfilled ICT jobs per month in the Netherlands. According to CBS.nl, there were 72,000 ICT companies in the Netherlands in 2016. During the final quarter of 2016, there were 10,000 unfilled ICT vacancies. This number jumped to 12,300 during the first quarter of 2017. The CBS.nl report continues to tell us that one-quarter of companies with unfilled vacancies had to produce less in the second quarter because of this shortage.
The UWV has created a list of 24 things that employers can do to bridge this gap. However, now is a good time for career changers who would like to make the jump to the booming tech industry. As a result of the high demand in ICT professionals, software developers are earning more than ever. At the time of writing, global pay website, Payscale.com, shows us that the average starting salary for a Software Developer in Amsterdam is, €35,819.
ICT shortages – a global issue
As a result of global ICT shortages, software developers are in need all around the world. Current estimates are that there will be a shortage of between 500,000 and 900,000 ICT in Europe by 2020. In the USA, this number is predicted to be as high as 1,000,000. Therefore, software developers are learning quickly that they can utilise their skills wherever they go.
