Learning through lockdown

Over the last couple of weeks, the restrictions have been getting heavier in the Nordics. As we know, this is not exactly good news for businesses as they struggle to keep their doors open. In March, where restrictions were the heaviest, many companies and individuals looked online to immediate upskilling. As we continue to face restrictions, the time is right for learning through lockdown.

Since March, we have seen just how dependent our society is on technology. Governments have asked businesses to do as much from home as possible. As Nordic societies are the most digitalised in the world, digitally-skilled employees are in increasing demand. Over recent days, we have spoken about how the World Economic Forum expects the workforce to change drastically between now and 2025. It emphasises the urgent need for people to upskill for tomorrow’s jobs.

Learning through lockdown – Where to start?

So, there are many ways of learning through lockdown while restrictions are keeping you inside. Code Institute trains complete beginners to software developers, and there are many tips that we recommend to people who wish to reskill and companies that want to upskill their teams.

Is coding for you?

Our course brings complete beginners to software developers in a very flexible learning setting. However, we ask all of our prospective students to take part in a free 5 Day Coding Challenge. This challenge teaches the basics of HTMLCSS and JavaScript. The challenge takes about an hour a day over five days. It is essential for us that every student knows what they are getting into, and it will let you know if you have an aptitude for code. It also shows us whether or not you are willing to spend time on the program. Our full-stack program takes 52 weeks to complete, and we need students to dedicate a minimum of twelve hours per week on the program. So get on with the free challenge, and see what our course has to offer.

Choose a language that is in demand

At Code Institute, we specialise in full-stack software development. We focus on many languages that are currently in-demand, like JavaScript and Python. These are arguably the two most important and popular languages in all industries. Our advice is to choose a language that is in high demand, as it will make your chances of a quick career change increase massively. We decided to teach JavaScript and Python because our Industry Advisory Council has told us that these are among the most sought-after skills.

Quality is key

With many learning institutions closed due to COVID-19, many educational providers have turned to online spaces. A report from the Danish Evaluation Institute shows that the experience students have had with online education during the pandemic, is directly correlated to the quality of the learning management system (LMS) they are using while studying. A good program comes with a tried and tested LMS. With the rush to get services online, many educational institutes have not had the time to set up a good and working LMS.

Code Institute has invested heavily to ensure that our LMS is the best it can be. We have built our platform based on Harvard and MIT’s edX platform. Our LMS has been built upon, torn down, and rebuilt successfully over the last five years. To ensure quality from its LMS Code Institute has also created a proprietary analytics platform that can see when a student is having difficulties. In turn, this sets appropriate support systems into action.

Choose a program with exceptional support

When choosing your provider to help you learn your way through lockdown, it’s crucial to opt for one that will support you. While some education providers offer support to their students, others leave their learners to their own devices. Code Institute provides amazing support. Simply put, it is unrivalled.

Between Student Care, 24/5 plus weekend Tutor Support, Personal Mentors, Community Support and Career Services, what’s on offer is fantastic. However, it’s up to each of our students to use these supports. While our Student Care team will stay in frequent contact, our students must avail of the tutor supports when and as required. Likewise, our Career Support begins after the completion of your second milestone project.

Tech Tips - Staying Ahead the Hackers

We’re never too far from a high-profile story about hacking: Whether it’s mentioned in reference to celebrities’ compromised accounts; large-scale hacks like England’s NHS, or embarrassing corporate attacks like Sony’s one (which revealed confidential internal emails). Everyday people have, of course, fallen victim to ransomware attacks, so how can you avoid it? Sadly, while there’s […]
