The 5 Day Coding Challenge – Time & Commitment. Totally worth it.

Author:

There is a famous Theodore Roosevelt quote, “Nothing worth having comes easy“. It’s true. Think about it. You don’t just wake up one morning and climb Everest. If you want to do that, you have to work hard for it. The same theory can be applied to anything worth having. Take the 5 Day Coding Challenge for example. It’s no Everest, but learning to code does take some time. If you’ve recently given up on this challenge, or if you’re contemplating same, don’t give up. It’s worth the time.

5 Day Coding Challenge – “What it says on the tin”

The 5 Day Coding Challenge does exactly what it says on the tin. It’s a challenging course that is generally designed to be completed over five days. Additionally, it will demonstrate to you if you have the time, commitment and patience to learn how to code. See what and how you’ll learn through the video below.

Time

We are sometimes told that the 5 Day Coding Challenge is time-consuming. In fairness to us, we did warn you – the clue is in the name.

We do understand that this is a time-consuming course. We recommend 40 minutes to an hour per evening over the space of five days. In this world, that is a lot of time. But, changing your career for the better does require time and commitment. You won’t just fall into a perfect job.

Before you sign up to one of our courses, we recommend planning out your week. If you currently work from 9-5, would the best time to do this be in the evenings? If so, pencil an hour from each evening into your diary. The best time will be different for everyone. There’s always something going on, between putting kids to bed, eating dinner, chill out time, or date time.

We’re not asking you to cancel any of these events, but if you want to dip your toe into the world of code, you need to pencil in some code time. Plan around these things – it’s worth spending time to learn something new. Another idea might be get up half an hour early, or go to bed half an hour later, for a week. It’s all about time management.

Lack of Motivation

Often, a lack of motivation is mistaken for time. As in, some people are not motivated enough to offer time. Simply put, and this isn’t specific to our challenge, you will not learn to code without putting some effort in. If you might be lacking the motivation required to do the challenge, why not psych yourself up? For some people, watching motivational videos helps.

Some people watch David Goggins for inspiration.

Likewise, others watch Simon Sinek to remind them how you have to work for the things that you really want.

A personal favourite of mine is Al Pacino’s speech in Any Given Sunday.

The moral of all of these videos is that it’s the person who’s willing to work, who’ll capitalise. It makes sense.

Too difficult

On occasion, we hear that our challenge is too difficult. In the same way, some people find it too easy. How people react to our challenge will always differ depending on different people’s approaches to the course material. Of course, for those of you who find it too difficult, one of the things that we recommend to all of our full-stack students is to try what we call the 15-minute rule.

In a nutshell, this is where we advise you to completely focus on resolving the problem for 15 minutes. If you don’t have the answer after that, it’s time to ask someone for help. Often, the answer can be found by a simple Google or YouTube search. You also have the option of going back to the video on the subject itself and re-running the repl.it until you get a better understanding as to what needs to be done in any particular challenge.

5 Day Coding Challenge – Don’t give up.

Remember, if you do miss out on a day of the challenge, don’t worry. You can make up the time during the next day. Alas, if you want to achieve this, you have to work at it. If, before you’ve finished the challenge, you decide that the commitment is too much, we do keep your challenge open for up to two weeks.

Finally, we really hope you’ll try and complete our 5 Day Challenge, and remember – nothing ventured, nothing gained. Sign up through the form below.
