How a Coding Bootcamp Supported This Career Change Into Tech
Name Rosie Trainor
Role Software Engineer
Course Full-Stack Software Developer Skills Bootcamp
Skills Gained Programming languages, frameworks, version control, agile working practices
Key Achievement Secured two job offers and moved into a software engineering role

Rosie Trainor moved from a background in philosophy and dental nursing into a new role as a software engineer, after completing the Full-Stack Software Developer Skills Bootcamp with Code Institute. Her story shows what a coding bootcamp career change can look like when structured learning meets consistent support.

What Led Rosie Trainor to a Coding Bootcamp Career Change?

Rosie studied philosophy at university, then worked as a dental nurse. She valued the collaborative, grounded nature of that work, and wanted to bring back the kind of problem-solving she’d loved during her philosophy degree. Coding offered both: the collaboration and satisfaction of building something real, combined with the problem-solving and continuous learning she felt was missing.

She had already been learning to code independently, but wanted something more structured and intensive. That search led her to a coding bootcamp career change built around exactly that kind of focused, guided learning.

“It also gave me the confidence that I could genuinely make this career change.”

How Does a Coding Bootcamp Prepare You for a Software Role?

The bootcamp combined technical training with structured career support. On the technical side, Rosie built a solid understanding of programming languages, frameworks, and how the web works, alongside version control and agile working practices used daily on real engineering teams. Alongside this, careers support helped her navigate job applications and interviews.

“The course also helped me understand the tech workplace more broadly and figure out what I’m most interested in, which led me to the new job, something I wouldn’t have achieved without the practical experience and career support the course provided.”

The project she is proudest of is the final hackathon. It remains one of her strongest examples to talk through in interviews. The pace was demanding, and taking ownership of a project’s scope and direction felt intimidating at first, but support was always available when she needed it.

What Advice Does She Give Others Considering a Coding Bootcamp Career Change?

Rosie’s advice is to take things one step at a time. “Don’t try to understand everything at once, just focus on what’s in front of you. You’ll keep learning no matter what, so trust the process.” She also points to the value of careers support: “The careers team are essential, pay attention to their guidance, they know what they’re doing, and landing a job really is possible.”

Rosie will use the skills she built daily in her new role as a software engineer, and credits the course with helping her understand the tech industry broadly enough to know exactly where she wanted to land.
