In November 2024, Lola Crispin completed Code Institute’s 16-Week High-Performance Full Stack Software Development bootcamp, funded and run in collaboration with Thames Valley LEP in Berkshire. The course equips learners with full-stack software development skills, preparing them to enter the digital workforce in various roles.

Tell us about yourself and how you found your way to this programme.
I have a non-technical background in project management and client relations, with over 10 years of experience in the creative industry. I wanted to learn coding to bridge the gap between business and technology and to better support technical projects. I discovered the Code Institute program while exploring ways to transition into a more tech-focused role. The structured learning path and strong support network convinced me that this was the ideal way to gain practical coding skills and confidently make the leap into the tech sector.
What are you passionate about (in general)?
I have a strong passion for continuous learning and personal growth. I believe that exploring new skills – whether diving into tech or learning yoga – helps create a healthy balance in life and enhances overall well-being.
What appeals to you about coding?
I’m drawn to coding because it allows me to bridge the gap between the technical and non-technical sides of a project. Understanding and contributing to the development process gives me a more holistic approach to problem-solving. There’s something incredibly rewarding about watching a concept evolve into a fully functional product!
What did you like about the programme delivery?
I appreciate the structured approach to the programme. The guidance and resources have helped me balance learning with other commitments.
What are the main things you learned on the course?
The course taught me the core principles of full-stack development, from front-end styling to back-end databases, along with Agile methodology to create adaptable and effective projects. It also improved my problem-solving skills and strengthened my ability to collaborate on technical projects. During three hackathons, I had the opportunity to lead a team twice, which further developed my leadership skills in a tech setting.
How has the course helped you to progress?
This course has broadened my career options, allowing me to consider roles I previously wouldn’t have qualified for. It’s helped me bridge the gap between my project management background and my growing technical skills.
What are the main challenges you have had to overcome while learning?
One of the toughest challenges was keeping up with the pace of learning, especially given the intensity of the course and the complexity of technical concepts. Coming from a non-technical background, I initially found it challenging, but I developed strategies like consistent practice and a step-by-step learning approach, which helped me build confidence and make steady progress.
What do you like about learning on the Code Institute platform?
The platform’s blend of theory and practice is excellent. It’s interactive and allows me to apply my knowledge immediately, making learning coding engaging and effective.
What are you most proud of developing so far?
I’m most proud of developing a recipe website that allows users to create and manage their own accounts. This project challenged me to apply a full-stack approach, using HTML5, CSS with Bootstrap for styling, and Python with the Django framework for back-end functionality.
I also integrated PostgreSQL for data management and used Cloudinary for media storage. Deploying the project on Heroku taught me the complete development and deployment cycle. This project strengthened my technical skills and gave me a deep sense of satisfaction in creating a functional product from start to finish.
What would you recommend to other learners considering learning to code?
Take it one step at a time and embrace the learning process. Don’t be discouraged by initial difficulties!
What is your long-term goal with these skills?
My long-term goal is to transition fully into a tech-focused project management or product owner role, where I can bridge the gap between technical and business teams and lead data-driven projects. I envision a position where I can leverage my strong background in project management and client relations while continuously enhancing my technical knowledge to drive impactful solutions.
