Future of Jobs Report 2020 – WEF

The global pandemic has had a massive impact. We are living in a time where offices lie empty, and millions of people have been forced into unemployment. Nobody could have predicted this. As a result, the World Economic Forum (WEF) has made its predictions on the jobs market for 2025. The underlying message is that technology will grow and teams will have to change with it. In its hard-hitting Future of Jobs Report 2020, the WEF lays out the jobs outlook for the next five years.

The report, published in October, advises of 85 million jobs at risk of being automated over the next five years. As scary as this number is, they do indicate that in place of these jobs will come 97 million new roles, “that are more adapted to the new division of labour between humans, machines and algorithms”.

As government-enforced lockdowns increase around the world, the outlook is bleak as we move deeper into global recessions. However, industries are now looking to technology for a way out. As the report indicates, over the next five years, tech roles will be pivotal. There are not enough digitally skilled employees to fulfil the needs of businesses, and the window of opportunity to reskill workers has become shorter.

The Future of Jobs Report 2020 also highlights the top 20 job roles in increasing and decreasing demand across industries. In it, the WEF highlights mostly tech-related roles that will be in increased demand over the next five years. Regarding decreased demand, the World Economic Forum highlights some of the following; Data Entry Clerks, Accountants, Assembly Workers, Mechanics, Sales Reps, Bank Tellers, Construction Labourers, and many more.

Emerging Roles

According to the report, cloud computing, data & AI, and software engineering, among others, are “emerging roles” for the jobs of tomorrow. The report lists Python Developer, Full Stack Engineer, JavaScript Developer, Backend Developer and FrontEnd Developer, among the jobs of tomorrow.

We all know that the world of work has completely changed over the last few months. Working from home has become the norm. Unfortunately, with the pandemic, we have also seen an atrocious amount of unemployment, furloughs, and lay-offs. However, now is an opportunity for the masses to secure their jobs into the future. For many, it’s a good time to upskill

Upskilling

Governments around the world are aware of the skills gap and they are planning to assist companies and individuals in upskilling. Companies realise this too, which is why so many offer opportunities to staff to upskill. The Future of Jobs Report 2020 reckons that on average, “employers expect to offer reskilling and upskilling to just over 70% of their employees by 2025”. Now is the time to ask your employer if upskilling is available to you.
