Software developer salaries versus USA’s 20 most common jobs

Often we’re asked by potential students what the benefits of being a coder are. In fact, we recently published an article about it here. One of the points we always mention is salary. While we know that life isn’t all about money, we do know that most people find an attractive salary to be enticing. So we’ll say it again, one reason for considering a career in, or a career change to, software development is salary. Here’s a look at how software developer salaries compare against the 20 most popular jobs in the USA.

Firstly, according to the global pay website, payscale.com, the average income for an entry-level software developer is $67,000 (at the time of writing). However, current statistics on the United States Department of Labour’s Bureau of Labour Statistics website tell us that the average salary across the board of software developers is a massive $103,560. To offer some perspective on this figure, the same Bureau tells us that the average salary of all workers in the USA right now is $45,396.

While current estimates indicate that there will be an ICT (Information and Communications Technology) skills gap of 1 million by 2020, the expectation regarding software developers is that there will be a demand for an extra 302,500 developers by 2026. The expected growth for software developers between now and then is 24%, which is much faster than the average growth outlook of 7% for all occupations. Currently, there are 188,000 job openings in the information industry.

Because software developer salaries are at an all-time high, there has never been a better time for those who are contemplating a career change, or fresh graduates who are considering their futures. The tech skills gap is not unique to the USA and the skills learned in software development are transferable around the world.
